Vacant properties in cold weather climates should be adequately protected to prevent freeze damage over winter months. Too many vacant homes in communities across the country have fallen victim to freeze damage over the past 5 years. Freeze damage and lack of proper maintenance at vacant properties can further diminish property values that have already plummeted as a result of the crash in the housing market, which can be hugely detrimental to local communities.

Simple measures can be taken by City Staff to protect vacant properties from major freeze damage. In fact, Apple Valley staff has devised an effective program to protect our vacant properties, but first we must know about them. Utility service can be disconnected at the curb, to minimize freeze damage in the event of a break. We are also able to work with property managers and realtors when available to ensure adequate winterization or that the heat is kept on.

If you know of a vacant property in your neighborhood Code Enforcement Staff would appreciate hearing from you by email at bpierson@ci.apple-valley.mn.us; or by phone at 952.953.2571.
