Ordinance Proposal: Amending Chapter 154 Regulating Signs -- Projecting Signs

Summary of Proposed Amendment:  The City Council will consider a draft ordinance amendment to the Sign Code, Chapter 154, to allow for “Projecting Signs” in all commercial, industrial, and institutional districts. A projecting sign is a small pedestrian oriented sign that projects perpendicular to the building, near the front entrance. These signs often cannot be viewed off site, and are intended for site wayfinding and place-making. Projecting signs are permitted within the Central Village and Cobblestone Planned Developments as these districts were created with a pedestrian focus. A new business has requested the ability to install such a sign. City staff made the determination of a community wide benefit to allowing the signs in commercial districts and therefore brought the ordinance forward as a staff initiated amendment.
