Sanitary Sewer System

Collection System

The public sanitary collection system carries wastewater away from homes and businesses to disposal sites owned by the Metropolitan Council Environmental Services Division. Anything that goes down an indoor drain in your home or building enters the public sanitary sewer system, unless you have a private septic system (SSTS).

Sanitary Sewer System Maintenance

Sanitary sewer lines run under the street and through utility easements in grassy areas. Each year, approximately one-third of the city's sanitary sewer lines are cleaned. Lines requiring a higher level of maintenance are cleaned annually or semiannually. This routine maintenance helps to prevent blockages and backups. View a map of this year’s scheduled cleaning and related information.
