Family Group Conferencing

Police Family Group Conferencing is an alternative to court prosecution for first-time juvenile offenders. Apple Valley police officers orchestrate the conferences, where juvenile offenders meet face-to-face with their victims.

  • The offender has an opportunity to explain his or her actions and must admit guilt. Victims tell the offender, in detail, how the offense affected them.

  • After both the offender and victim have an opportunity to explain their feelings about the incident, they discuss what can be done to remedy the problem.

  • A contract is drawn up, and the juvenile must complete the conditions of the contract within a certain period of time to successfully complete the program.

Juveniles who fail to complete the contract are referred to juvenile court. Juveniles who successfully complete the program are diverted from court.
