Pandemic Flu and Other Disease Outbreak Preparedness

ABOUT THE H5N1 INFLUENZA:

The City of Apple Valley would like citizens to be informed and prepared for a possible flu pandemic. There presently is no influenza pandemic in the United States but governments at all levels are continuously preparing for disasters, including an influenza pandemic. We encourage families and businesses to prepare as well.

Here are some things you should know and precautions you can take:

Influenza is a contagious disease of the lungs.
Influenza usually spreads by infected people coughing and sneezing.
Most people will have little or no immunity to the H5N1 strain of influenza.

FLU PRECAUTIONS AND PREVENTION TIPS:

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Stay home and rest if you are sick.
Cover your mouth and nose with tissue when coughing or sneezing.
Wash your hands regularly.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Families should construct a family emergency kit for the home with essential supplies such as food, water, medicine and a thermometer.
Businesses should consider developing a Business Continuity Plan.
