Crime Prevention Programs

Facts & Myths About Crime

Opinion polls show that fear of a crime is one of the greatest causes of worry. Concerns can be healthy when they lead to reducing the chances of being a victim of a crime.

Attention to crime by newspapers and television may lead to the impression that crime is everywhere.

The most frequent crimes are against property, such as burglary and theft from yards, garages, etc., and occur when residents are away. Crimes of violence, although feared the most, happen the least. Most violent crimes are committed by relatives or acquaintances. One of the best-known crime deterrents is a good neighbor.

Each of us can take a few simple steps to reduce our chances of becoming a victim. You can even make your neighborhood a safer place to live by becoming a part of the Apple Valley Neighborhood Watch Force.

Minnesota Crime
Alert Network

The Crime Alert Network, a statewide program, allows participating law enforcement agencies to send e-mail messages alerting recipients to criminal information or crime trends that may affect their business, institution, organization or neighborhood. This program is available to all businesses, schools, Neighborhood Watch forces and law enforcement agencies in the city. To enroll your home or business, call Crime Prevention Specialist Pam Walter at 952-953-2706. Link to the State of MN Crimealert web site >>>

Crime Free Multi-Housing Coalition

The goal of the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program is to involve both landlord and tenants in keeping their own properties free of illegal activity. In order for rental property to receive certification as a Crime Free Multi-Housing property, the manager must undergo training in crime prevention issues, make necessary physical and environmental changes to property, and involve residents in Neighborhood Watch.

Apple Valley has an active group of multi-housing managers who meet monthly to discuss issues and work toward certification of their properties in the Minnesota Crime Free Multi-Housing Program.

Call (952) 953-2706 if you are interested in more information on how to become a certified leasing or rental manager.

Home & Business Premise Surveys

The Apple Valley Police Department will come to your home or business to conduct a security survey of the property. Window and door locks, patio and glass doors, lighting, shrubbery, and safety habits will be examined and suggestions of areas that need improvement will be provided to you.

To schedule a survey or for more information, call 952-953-2706.

Crime Prevention Presentations & Tours

Talks and tours are given to the general public that include personal safety, home security, animal control, child safety, drug awareness, family violence, fire prevention, traffic related issues, the 9-1-1 system and many more. The Apple Valley Police Department is also open to tour by calling (952) 953-2700.
