AVPD School Liaison Programs
Middle School Liaison Program began in 1987. Officer Jim Gummert participates in the Middle School Liaison Program. He divides his time between Apple Valley's three middle schools: Valley Middle, Scott Highlands, and Falcon Ridge. Due to the volume of students and site locations, Officer Gummert responds to high priority situations on an "as needed" basis. He is a valuable resource to the middle school staff, students, and parents. Officer Gummert is also involved in teaching a variety of class topics, including drug education/prevention, shoplifting prevention, violence prevention, civil rights and responsibilities, and health and ethics. He has also spoken to various community organizations and parent groups on some of these same topics. High School Liaison Program started in 1993. Officer Mike Eliason has served in this position since its inception. In addition to providing campus security and investigating offenses, Officer Eliason instructs in a wide variety of settings, including constitutional law, drivers education, health and wellness, developmental psychology, criminology, and mediation. Officer Eliason is also an assistant advisor to the Students Against Drunk Driving program. He is a consultant for the Mock Trial Team and can be found at many school activities, including athletic events, concerts, and plays. The Eastview High School Liaison program entered its first year of operation in the fall of the 1997-98 school year. The school has students from Eagan, Rosemount, Lakeville, and Apple Valley. Officer Doug Baird was reassigned from the Patrol Division to act as the first Eastview High School Liaison Officer. He provides campus security and investigates criminal cases. In addition, Officer Baird has been asked to instruct and give various presentations for high school classes. Public Safety, biology, constitutional law, social studies, drivers education, and physical education are some of the classes he has taught. Officer Baird has been involved in providing information as a resource to the school and many parents who have requested his assistance in child concerns. Gang involvement, drug use and prevention, and other topics have been discussed with special interest groups. Officer Baird also acts as the assistant advisor to the Students Against Drunk Driving program. He has found the liaison program to be an important part of community policing, with positive feedback from the staff, students, and parents.
