This unit consists of the Chief of Police, a Patrol Captain, a Support Services Captain, and an Administrative Assistant. Patrol Division: The uniformed and most visible division of the Department. The Patrol Division is clearly the most visible division to the public. Officers are generally in uniform and drive marked police cars. They are fully equipped to answer calls for medical emergencies, disturbances, motor vehicle collisions, traffic enforcement, and crimes. The Patrol Division is committed to making Apple Valley a safe place for citizens and visitors. The Patrol Captain is responsible for overseeing the Patrol Division, which includes:
Investigations: This division is responsible for police investigations. They serve as a support unit for the Patrol Division and conduct investigations directed from Patrol, citizens, businesses, and other governmental agencies. The Investigations Division is comprised of one sergeant and five investigators, one of which is assigned to the Dakota County Drug Task Force. The unit is responsible for the investigation of homicides, assaults, robberies, arsons, burglaries, financial frauds, thefts, and child abuse/neglect cases. To build a solid case, it is necessary for the investigator to conduct formal statements of victims, witnesses and suspects. Additional duties of investigators include preparing and executing search warrants, completing line-ups, processing crime scenes by photographing the scene, dusting for and lifting of fingerprints, and collecting and preserving evidence for court. The unit also assists the City by completing background investigations as needed. Dispatch: AVPD operates 24-hour dispatching services for police, fire, and ambulance calls. Remember to call 9-1-1 if you need to report a suspicious person or activity or if you need the assistance of the police department, fire department, or an ambulance. Calmly explain your problem and what you need. When possible, provide as many details as you can, such as the suspect's description, license plate number, direction of travel, etc. Stay on the line until the dispatcher hangs up or assistance arrives. Records: The Records staff performs timely and accurate entry of crimes, traffic citations, and calls for service data into the computerized records system. The Records Division consists of four records personnel, one investigative division secretary, a police receptionist and the Records Supervisor. They are responsible for transcribing police reports and statements, preparing statistical reports, processing juvenile and investigative cases, completing background checks for daycare licensing and handgun permits. Records staff also prepare copies of reports for citizens in accordance with Data Practices regulations. Other duties include issuing dog licenses, and maintaining a database and billing for false alarms.
