Police K-9
One of the newest additions to the Apple Valley Police Department is "Radar" the department's first K-9. Radar, a German Shepard, assumed his duties with his handler, Officer Eva Rudolph-Peterson upon graduation from the 13-week Ramsey County Sheriff's Office Police Canine School on June 2, 2005. Radar has many skills that make him a valuable tool for our department. Tracking - Radar uses his heightened sense of smell to detect the path of fleeing criminals or missing children/adults. He can track across many surfaces including concrete, grass, sand and gravel. Criminal Apprehension - In the event of a fleeing felon or violent individual refusing to surrender to a law enforcement officer, Radar is trained to physically apprehend the individual by biting the person on the arm and hanging on until the handler releases him. Building Searches - Radar can enter a building and search for an intruder in a fraction of time that it would take officers on foot to do so. Area Searches - Radar can search large areas for suspects and locate them using his heightened sense of smell. Our department did not have to wait long to see the value in having a K-9. Twelve hours after graduating from the K-9 School, Radar and Officer Rudolph-Peterson were called to a local gravel pit where three armed men had abandoned their car, fleeing on foot after a high speed pursuit. Radar and K-9s from two other police departments were called to search for the men. As a result, two were apprehended within a short period of time. The second one was found two hours later. If
