Rain Barrels

Rain barrels are a simple and effective device homeowners can install on their property to reduce their impact on neighborhood ponds and wetlands. They are installed at the end of downspouts leading from rooftop gutters. When it rains, they collect the water that lands on the roof and store it for later use on flower gardens, landscaping, or lawns. By temporarily storing water and directing it to areas where it will soak into the ground, rain barrels can reduce the potential for neighborhood flooding and the amount of contaminates that end up in runoff entering neighborhood ponds or wetlands.

Rain barrels can be purchased online, from various non-profit groups, hardware stores, and garden centers; or, rain barrels can be constructed by homeowners for about $20-$60.

The Ramsey-Metro Watershed District has put together a set of simple instructions for three different rain barrel construction designs link to PDF >>>;

and, the City of Apple Valley has put together the following list of vendors that sell rain barrel parts link to PDF >>>.
