Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors are required to be installed in new homes by the building code. Current standards require detectors in each bedroom, in hallways giving access to bedrooms, in some vaulted ceiling areas, and on each level of a home. Smoke detectors installed in new homes or in previously unfinished areas must be hard-wired to the electrical system and interconnected with other smoke detectors.

If you own a home that does not have smoke detectors, you should install them. If you do any type of construction work on your home that requires a building permit, you may be required to install detectors as required by current standards. Smoke detectors installed in finished areas of existing homes in some cases may be battery operated.

Test and maintain your smoke detectors according to the manufacturer recommendations. Smoke detectors are inexpensive and save lives if maintained properly.
