Furnace Filters Dirty filters can affect the efficiency and safety of your furnace. Filters should be checked at least monthly. Follow the manufacturer recommendations for cleaning and replacement. If you are not sure where and how many filters there are in your system, call a mechanical contractor or the original installer to verify the locations. If you have other equipment attached to your furnace such as a humidifier or a ventilation system, they may have filters that must be cleaned. Check the manufacturer booklet.
