Residential Building Permits Building permits are required for most types of construction projects. It is not possible to list every situation when a permit is required. The best way to determine if a permit is required is to call us at (952) 953-2588 and describe the work you are doing. Some of the more common projects that require a building permit are decks, porches, swimming pools, fireplaces, roofing, and basement finishes. Permits are also required for plumbing and mechanical work. Mechanical work refers to heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems. Permits for electrical work are issued by the state. Call the State Board of Electricity at (651) 642-0800 for information. It is important to plan ahead when trying to obtain a permit. As part of the process you will have to fill out an application and provide plans of your project. The process to review each application and plans may take 7 to 10 days depending on the time of year. We review applications and plans in the order received, so even though your project may be simple there may be other projects ahead of yours in the review process that take more time. The busiest time of year for us is May through September. Some of the more frequently
requested applications are available here. If you do not find the
application you want, please call us at (952) 953-2588.
