Commercial Building Permits

Notice: The Apple Valley City Council adopted Chapter 1306 of the State Building Code. This chapter authorizes optional provisions for the installation of fire suppression systems. Please contact the city Fire Marshall (952-9532679) for information and the actual date enforcement will begin.

Building Permits are required for all new commercial buildings. Buildings permits are also required for additions, alterations, and remodeling. The City of Apple Valley enforces the 2007 State Building Code, including the 2006 International Building Code. Other codes include the 2003 State Plumbing Code, the 2004 State Mechanical Code, including the 2000 International Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes and the 2000 Minnesota Energy Code. For questions on commercial buildings, please call (952) 953-2581 and speak to our commercial inspector.

Permits for electrical work are issued by the State Board of Electricity. You may call them directly at (651) 284-5064 for information. Their website is: www.electricity.state.mn.us

Permit applications are available at the Building Inspection Division office located at 7100 147th Street West, Apple Valley, MN (55124) or go to the quick links sections and click on Permit Applications. Permit applications copied from this website must be printed on colored paper as indicated below:

Commercial Building Permit applications must be printed on gray paper.

Plumbing Permit applications must be printed on goldenrod paper.

Mechanical Permit applications must be printed on pink paper.

Fire Suppression (sprinkler) Permit applications must be printed on ivory paper.

Additional questions about permit applications should be directed to our staff at (952) 953-2588.

Three sets of building plans must be submitted with the permit application. Most commercial plans must be signed and stamped by a Minnesota Licensed Architect and Professional Engineer. One copy of the plans will be returned when the permit is issued; this copy must remain on the job site for use by our inspectors.

Commercial plans shall be drawn to scale and show room sizes and total areas. For additions, and alterations the square footage of areas under construction must be included. Plans or documents submitted shall include the type of construction and if the building is designed as separated (A) or non-separated (B). The allowable size and the actual size of the building must be shown with details of any area increases. Code section numbers should be shown when possible.

Plans are reviewed in the order they are received. Schedule is determined by the number of plans received. If plans are not approved, a letter will be sent to the permit applicant explaining what additional information is needed.
