Street and Corridor Studies Apple Valley is centrally located south of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Businesses, employees and residents enjoy a diversity of freeway choices moving north/south via 1-35W, 1-35E and Cedar Avenue (Highway 77) with connections just across the river to 1-494 and Highway 62. Decisions regarding the type, intensity, and location of land uses dictate the type and level of transportation systems within a community. Apple Valley, like all Twin Cities suburban communities, has developed with the assumption that the car would be the primary mode of travel. The development of the City has led to a well-planned grid system of streets and roads that fulfill travel desires of residents and employees in the City. However, as the City nears full development, issues have arisen regarding roadway capacity, the deterioration of neighborhood cohesiveness caused by the number of cars traveling on residential streets, and safety. Transit and ridesharing planning activities have been actively promoted as new development occurs in the City. Generally, these activities have included determining the need for bus stops, car and van pooling, and ridesharing. Transit service in Apple Valley is provided by the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority. As population growth in Dakota County and the Metro Area in general continues to create strains on the existing transportation system, planners look to create transportation alternatives for the future. Several studies have been conducted that evaluate ideas such as commuter rail service feasibility and other transit options.
