MSP Runway 17/35 (North-South) Runway Usage and Impacts The addition of Runway 17/35 adds 25 percent more capacity at MSP and allows the airport to meet growing demand for air service nationally and internationally. The new runway also helps reduce congestion and delays at the airport. With the many benefits of the MSP Airport being so close, so too come certain side effects, such as air traffic noise. The runway is expected to accommodate approximately 37 percent of departures and 16.5 percent of the arrivals at the airport annually. The runway operates to the south with departures to the south and arrivals coming from the south to the north. The runway could be used for both departures and arrivals on the same day.
