Traffic Complaint Policy

The enforcement of traffic laws is a vital component of the Apple Valley Police Department’s commitment to advancing the safety and comfort of citizens.

In 1996, the Department implemented a traffic complaint policy designed to address recurring traffic problems more efficiently than traditional methods. We use the traffic complaint policy and its speed trailer as tools to address speeding problems. The trailer is an educational and data gathering tool. It displays the speed of the closest approaching vehicle as a reminder to all passing motorists. With traditional RADAR enforcement, only drivers who violate the speed limit by a significant degree are made aware of their violation when stopped and cited. The speed trailer is also equipped to gather statistical data on traffic flow and speeds.

The trailer, however, is not intended to replace traditional enforcement methods. Apple Valley officers are encouraged to actively enforce all of Minnesota’s traffic safety laws. Citations and directed patrol are quite effective in addressing many of Apple Valley’s traffic-related problems.
