& Pedestrian Safety News Articles "Thou Shalt Not Park Here" Illegally parked vehicles in Apple Valley may seem rare, especially when compared to large cities such as Washington, D.C. where virtually any spot 10 feet by 20 feet will be used for parking a vehicle. This includes front lawns and sometimes sidewalks. In reality, illegally parked vehicles in Apple Valley occur quite often, especially near schools, churches, parks, and entertainment centers where peak time parking demands might lead a motorist to park illegally. Sometimes motorists don't realize they are illegally parked, until they get a ticket. A bigger concern than the ticket is the safety impact created by illegally parked vehicles. State laws prohibit parking in certain areas on all streets and highways to foster safety. As examples, you cannot park on a sidewalk or within an intersection for obvious reasons. Less obvious are some of the following locations: · Within 10 feet of a fire hydrant. This is to provide fire department
quick access to the hydrant. In Apple Valley, many arterial and collector streets are posted with signs for no parking in order to use the entire roadway for vehicle movements. These include major streets like Cedar Avenue and lesser streets like 147th Street. These are usually marked by a simple "no parking" sign. In other locations, parking is selectively prohibited to improve safety sight distance at corners, or to eliminate potential conflicts which could lead to accidents. Various legends can be used, such as no parking here to corner. While the fiscal concerns over a parking violation may be relatively small and affordable to some, the safety impacts of an illegally parked vehicle can be rather dramatic. It would be very unfortunate to live with the knowledge that your illegally parked vehicle contributed to a serious accident involving a pedestrian at a crosswalk or two vehicles at an intersection where your vehicle was parked directly in front of a stop sign.
